Even if the meeting is dull, you’ll at least be comfortable in your Ambi chair. Adjustable all over to support your fidgeting, and the innovative, patented CoActive tilt mechanism fully supports you as you lean back to gaze out the window.
Design story
Herman Miller’s comprehensive family of seating was enhanced with the highly adjustable Ambi work chair in 1995. Ambi derives its name from the Latin word for ‘both' and the chair’s adaptability allows it to perform as either a general office chair or dedicated task chair. Ambi responds to today’s ergonomic realities by providing high-value, lower-cost ergonomic seating.
Herman Miller applied its 25 years of ergonomic seating research to the design of the Ambi chair. That research was supplemented with focus groups, user tests, and R&D testing to be sure the chair met today’s real world workplace needs.
The results are seen in the chair’s attention to ergonomic detail: for example, the CoActive tilt mechanism promotes healthy, active sitting by making it easy and comfortable for workers to move in their chairs throughout the workday.
Likewise, the chair arms are wide, soft, and recessed for adequate support and exceptional comfort; the contoured pads for the forearms contrast sharply with the hard, narrow arms found on other chairs.
The design of the Ambi chair allows for quick and easy adjustment with as few controls as possible. Adjustability is further enhanced with controls that are visually unique and marked with simple, easy-to-use icons and touch points. All adjustments can be made from a seated position.
The materials used on the Ambi chair are strong and of high quality. High-strength, low-alloy steel forms the skeleton of the chair; and adjustable-control handles and levers that get a lot of use are made of materials engineered specially for their strength.
Features and benefits
The CoActive tilt mechanism provides separate pivot points for the seat and backrest. As you lean back, the seat and back recline in synchronous motion to minimise pressure on your lower back.
The contoured lumbar area of the backrest promotes a healthful posture in a wide range of positions and shifts weight off the spine.
The seat’s waterfall front edge helps eliminate pressure on the thighs that can restrict circulation. Recessed arms let you pull up close to a worksurface. Armpads are wide, soft, and contoured to eliminate pressure points on wrists and arms.
Both armrests adjust in a 10cm height range to support the forearms, take weight off the shoulders, and keep arms and hands aligned to the task. The armrests also pivot inward 20 degrees and outward 10 degrees for more healthful keyboarding and mousing positions.
Adjustment controls feature raised touch points and identifying icons that make it easy to adjust the chair.
A lever on the chair’s right side allows you to pneumatically adjust the height of the seat in a 11cm range of adjustment.
A button under the back cushion lets you raise or lower the backrest in a 10cm range to provide proper fit and exact lumbar support.
A lever below the seat cushion lets you adjust the seat depth in a 5cm range to provide proper fit and optimal support for your thighs and back.
The seat can be adjusted to a 5-degree forward angle to help maintain the natural curve of your spine in forward-sitting, work-intensive postures.
